Eloise at Christmastime

  1. I always loved Kay Thompson's brilliant "Eloise" books. Eloise was born 3 years before me, although it receives a case of arrested development (not unlike Dennis the Menace), after having reached the age of 6 in 1955 and ever since the aging process. I was all 'Hotel Plaza, as a child in the late 50s and early 60s, and my mother spent many happy years in the Big Apple, some as a resident of Barbizon. My grandmother once told my mother that the oil portrait of Eloise in the Plaza lobby was thinking "He must be the daughter of the manager," because no other explanation could account for such a child "ugly" being so exposed visibly! Kay Thompson was a graduate of the same high school in St. Louis, like my mother, and has continued to make great, gutsy triumphs in Hollywood as a dancer, choreographer, designer, and actress (including his role in "Funny Face" with Fred Astaire and Audrey Hebburn as the editor of Vogue Magazine ISH which called "Think Pink!"). I admire the multi-talented and mercurial Thompson and his inspiration illustrator, Hilary Knight has done as much as Thompson to bring Eloise to life. For this, I very much like Eloise, who was by all accounts Kay Thompson's alter-ego. The first Eloise book was subtitled "A book for adults early, a little girl who lives at the Hotel Plaza." Eloise was a child, but books were not intended for children. Adults, especially those who have raised their own children, to understand that children are no better, wiser, smarter, and Kinder than adults. But since at least "Pollyanna", if not before, Disney Studios has been churning out a steady stream of propaganda films simply asserts opoosite. And now, Kay Thompson's wonderful playful, innocent, kids, obnoxious, sweet Eloise was beatified by Disney as Sage Child later. The problem with these lies (and all others) is that blind people of all ages on their weaknesses, while unfairly blame on others. Children are not wiser and better than adults, and have never been and will never be, even though Jimmy Carter has made me think his 11 year-old daughter Amy had the last word to say about nuclear weapons (it wrong, of course). Children are generally much more cruel than adults, and if they say something sweet innocent from time to time (which is rare) just because they have not lived long enough to learn better. But they will learn better in the end, even though some of them will suppress or deny their life, the lessons to become seriously engaged hypocritical adults. Adults who do not get this or not have children, or not pay attention to how they really are, the line Disney Studios' party notwithstanding. In books, the charm of Eloise vulnerabiltity his lying, his precocity, his smart-Aleck attitude, and his vital heat, which asked no quarter and did not take prisoners. . . delightful child like quality, but without, so to speak. . . Nuance. Disney tries to do it in an all-wise marriage counselor and social activist wants to do good. As such, Eloise is transformed from a lovely child into an adult * very * manipulative sociopathically moralist, that ruins the whole movie. . . as well as the ruins of real life, when people go wrong as such. This was never the character Thompson and Knight developed, which was simply a charming self-absorbed brat. . . and, among other things, much more believable as a real baby. Eloise future as an adult, it has been suggested at the time. Some think that her a likely candidate for alcholism, addictions, and maybe some dysfunctional sexual disorders, as an adult child of an absent mother and a father to all, raised in circumstances of material luxury is artificial and moral decay. These concerns are not blurry, but as we all know that Eloise will never, and can never get any older than 6 years of age, are, I suggest, unwarranted. In the meantime, I wish Disney Studios would not go away or do something else. Obviously, "the children of all ages (children sanctimonious and smug, narcissistic adults who can not or will not grow) you eat this garbage as Disney knows very well. Kay Thompson, but I think it would spin in his grave at this PC re-propaganda work of his special "inner child" that was much more real than this caricacture Disney: not despite, but because of, its obvious shortcomings childhood . On the positive side, the film's production values could not be better, and the girl who plays Eloise is. . . perfect. Julie Andrews is absolutely wonderful as Nanny. The sets are great. I loved the first half hour of this film, before the message Disney (children, especially girls, are the Master Race) has become evident. It is certainly well done! I was wondering, since it seemed to be an emphasis on making the 1950-times seem to like, because the offers of the toy store Toys R Us were instead the New York flagship toy store, FAO Schwartz?

  2. I know how "adorable" Sofia Vassilieva is assumed throughout – but the character of Eloise retracts in this Yuletide theme-disaster is nothing short of a horrible, bad example to children around the world. She's pushy. She's arrogant. She ignores Nanny's beautifully accented orders at every turn. Little Eloise also mistakenly believes that because his father owns the Plaza, is his birthright to interfere in the privacy of both staff and guests. Now, clearly Disney Puck transforms this nightmare just an agent of Cupid and everything (as usual) turns out peachy alive for all those involved. Still, Eloise is a pint-sized terror. I was hoping that someone threw the dwarf, talkative malcreant down one of several elevator shafts of the Plaza. One of the less disturbing for the character is at the very end, when a mysterious face-cannot-be-seen female figure (wearing a fabulous mink coat – props for outerwear) arrives grandly. And 'the mother of Eloisa. That apparently only be in the presence of his two or three times a year. Hear that.

  3. This film is great fun for children and adults – and I particularly enjoyed seeing Julie Andrews doing physical comedy. I think she needs to do much more than that! Take this movie – you'll love every year.

  4. My child is a big fan of Eloise, after seeing "Eloise Goes to Hollywood" about 300 times. We got this to get through the holiday travel, and it was a great success. Julia Andrews (Nanny) will steal a couple of scenes, and we had to explain a couple of times because Eloise closed in a closet, but he kept his attention and did not introduce any harmful ideas. I prefer the animated film Eloise, but since I'm just dad, I did not get a vote.

  5. I think that this, like Eloise at the Plaza is a great film. And 'one who Childern of all ages can truly enjoy. I really can not think of someone who does not enjoy this film. I also think that Elise At The Plaza, is a great film for everyone.
